I've been asked by our poultry team for a little help with some farmed Guinea pigs.
They have been diagnosed with chlamydia but not responded to doxycycline or enrofloxacin.
They've asked about the use of azithromycin. Not something I've ever

RE: Chlamydia in Guinea pigs
doxycycline or enrofloxacin
Hi,

Details I got were very brief, I can check but I suspect it will have been 5-7 days.

I'm not sure on the premises but they are normally pretty good for hygiene and ventilation as this is pushed hard on them and regularly checked. They dont often resort to antibiotics but as posted above, I'm not keen on endorsing someone prescribing meds from the human side of the fence.
If Chlamydia in this species is anything similar to cats then you need at least 21 days.

RE: Chlamydia in Guinea pigs

Hi,

If you need to treat then there's lots of other veterinary antibiotics to consider first.

What are the clinical signs and how is the maangement? I suspect this will boil down to old fashioned contagious disease management, rather than human antimicrobials.

RE: Chlamydia in Guinea pigs

They are being produced for a large pet shop chain on a large scale.

RE: Chlamydia in Guinea pigs

Peter, what are 'farmed Guinea pigs'?
