I have an 8 year old Vizla, MN, with epilepsy. He has had it for years and was on epiphen but the SE were too severe. He was switched to Pexion and was increased evenutually to the maximum dose.
He wasn't doing very well, O didn't want to start

RE: Vizla with epilepsy: on maximum Pexion and currently stable again after levetiracetam

We have two dogs on Pexion at standard doses. Perhaps higher doses may be effective for others but either specialist advice has been to change to phenobarb or cost has been a factor.

It is my first choice drug because of its safety etc but I m not convinced it its that great otherwise.

RE: Vizla with epilepsy: on maximum Pexion and currently stable again after levetiracetam

It's interesting that others haven't found pexion useful, I've generally found it to be effective.

RE: Vizla with epilepsy: on maximum Pexion and currently stable again after levetiracetam

[quote user="Bob Russell"]

Might explain why indicated for "anxiety and fear associated with noise phobia" was added to the data sheet. Must be good for something as a POMV after spending all that money.

RE: Vizla with epilepsy: on maximum Pexion and currently stable again after levetiracetam

I’ve also had a lot improve with purina neuro care diet which is worth a shot.

RE: Vizla with epilepsy: on maximum Pexion and currently stable again after levetiracetam

I'd be poutting the dog back on phenobarb and adding KBR. Why use a suppliment with unknown efficacy when bromide has been used longer than anything else, is cheap, safe and effective?! Try a different formulation (liquid/other tabs) as some seem better suited to some dogs than others.

RE: Vizla with epilepsy: on maximum Pexion and currently stable again after levetiracetam

This consensus statement on epilepsy treatment in dogs may be useful.
We do have a couple of patients that seem settled on it but mostly mine end up on phenobarbitone.

I would not add KBr into the equation at this stage.

Keppra can be good but again used as a sole therapy has not been that good in my experience. There is a belief that over time it may become less or ineffective.

Assuming renal and liver function are OK then I would be going for phenobarb but increased appetite and thirst are common anyway.

Some dogs seem to be restless on medication. not sure if this is medication or seizure related.
