I hope Leishmaniasis doesn't find a native vector and become endemic in the UK.

My understanding is that the leishmania vaccine doesn't prevent infection, but ensures the immune system responds appropriately to the infection to prevent it progressing to cause significant clinical signs.

RE: Leishmaniasis in untraveled UK dog
had full Cani leish vaccination
My understanding was the efficacy of Canileish was around 70%, vector control is needed to give greater protection - we recommend Advantix for short holidays or Scalibor for longer holidays (but make sure it is put on correctly and early enough). Alone I believe vector control performs better than just vaccine, though in endemic areas I'd recommend both for best protection.

RE: Leishmaniasis in untraveled UK dog

I have just had a positive pcr on a dog with severe conjunctival inflammation. False positives are possible, so we are hoping for a clear blood screen in a couple of weeks. My guessing is that it will still be a rarety, for even in countries with leishmania only some areas are endemic. This mosquito is very fussy with the environment it lives, and avoid any area too dry and hot or too cold.

But who knows, time will tell...
