At the end of this post, I will indicate how to proceed with dogs with cancer.

Times have moved on since William Harvey's experiments and we also have experimental regulations in the UK.

I believe your experiment falls under the Animals in Scientific Procedures Act (ASPA).

So to proceed you will need to obtain a personal licence and also work with an institution that has an establishment licence - contact the Home Office Inspectorate for details.

Once you've done that, and discussed your plans with the Named Veterinary Surgeon for the establishment you're working with, you will need to submit a project licence application to the relevant Animal Welfare and Ethics Review Board (AWERB). You will need to discuss the science behind your proposal and the power of your study (since n=1 in your proposition above, I think you'll need to do quite a bit of talking to justify that).

Generally speaking the max blood volume that can be withdrawn at any one time is 7ml/kg for most experimental protocols. So you will need at least a 15kg dog if you plan to withdraw 100ml at a time. I'm not sure on the rules for retranfusing blood and withdrawing another sample on the same day but your proposal would involve 5 blood draws - from different veins - on the same day. Not sure you'll get that past an AWERB, but good luck with your endeavours.
