I have a client with an elderly rabbit which has some proprioceptive deficits on it's hindlegs amongst other issues. The owner thins she is painful (already on metacam at appropriate dose). She very much wants to

RE: Gabapentin in rabbits

Hi, I have used metacam, gabapentin and tramadol regularly in rabbits without any consistent issue with side effects (doses as already mentioned). Twice only have had an owner mention slight sleepiness, but only with the tramadol. I’ll second the use of k laser...have had some awesome improvements on it (used for both dental disease and spinal pain)

RE: Gabapentin in rabbits

I’ve not had any side effects to stop me using the GABA

can I plug my K Laser too? I had a g pig with a spinal compression fracture go from paralysis to walking. Now some may say it would have occurred anyway but. I’m convinced the recovery was hastened and more lasting

RE: Gabapentin in rabbits

Do you know the cause of the proprioceptive deficits as this may impact on best treatment choice?

Depending on underlying cause, I have used varying combinations of gabapentin (11mg/kg bid), tramadol (10mg/kg bid-tid), meloxicam (0.5-1mg/kg), ketamine (2mg/kg SC q1-2wks), environmental modifications, glucosamine-chondroitin supplements and acupuncture for pain relief (with some scepticism on the last two!).

Typically up to 1 mg/kg bid. This rabbit is currently on 0.7 mg/kg bid.

Do you see many side effects with the gabapentin, does it seem pretty effective?

I have actually just started the rabbit on some tramadol to try. I advised against starting tramadol and gabapentin together.

RE: Gabapentin in rabbits

Hi Whats your "appropriate dose" for melox.

gaba 10mg/kg sid is what I'm using
