Latest new grad claims that they use a lot of pethidine at their university hospital - I'm not sure why, but each to their own.

thank-you, very truthful. it is not like I have not used alternatives, but just as in life we all have our preferences. I find that some of the suggested alternatives are in my hands not quite as predictable, and of course I will use to add to the analgesic profile.

It in part depends on what mg/kg you're using, but methadone is a much smaller volume for surgical analgesia so the price difference is going to be minimal in most cases - e.g. for a 20kg dog, your pethidine will cost £1.10 (5mg/kg), methadone would be around £1.20 (0.2mg/kg), morphine even cheaper both for at least 2-4x the duration, no pain on injection...

Is just because you've always used it really a good clinical reason for continuing to use it?!

I did use old timer in my description it is very short acting, and indeed there are many other alternatives out there. it is however very cheap@ £22 for 40 mls, very predictable, and I use it entirely in premix. Munroe's had some that I found with the help of Vetcel, and apparently I am not alone in searching out this elixir.

Is pethidine significantly cheaper than other u-agonist opiates? Price can often be a driver of whether a product is used or not, even when there are equivalent or superior products on the market.

Methadone given IM has almost as rapid onset as IV, the data show no significant difference between the two routes in terms of time to a certain plasma level.

Pethidine also stings IM, can't be given IV, and has been associated with allergic reactions.

Can't see why anyone would use it really, unless I'm missing something

I have to ask why? Short duration, huge dose volume, no better (probably poorer) analgesia than the alternatives (methadone).

What am I missing please? (genuine curiosity)

I've not tried to order it but it's on our online wholesaler list from Henry Schein.
