Joking aside, what about not confining 'ologies' to species in every case? So there could be separate medicine and surgery fora for cats/dogs, horses, farm, exotics, but others could be discipline focused with any species included e.g. dentistry, oncology to avoid limiting it to cat/dog cases. Would there also be potential for a discussion to exist in more than one forum simultaneously- e.g. an equine dental case shows up in both equine and dentistry to get maximum input from relevant people?

I think Michael's point is that for small animal you cover all the different 'ologies',/disciplines but that the whole of equine medicine and surgery is one category, rather than eg. Equine Ophthalmology, Equine Cardiology, Equine Orthopaedics.

Pfff! Exotics covers all disciplines for >10,000 reptile species, >9,000 bird species, 5410 mammal species (obviously taking out cats, dogs, horses, cattle, sheep and pigs!) and untold fish and invertebrates. You equine vets don't know how easy you have it with your single species ;)

There are three "ologies" of importance in farm work:

1. Stuff related to arse end of black and white cow.

2. Other stuff performed by those that mostly deal with the arse end of a black and white cow.

3. Other stuff dealth with by people that actually understand it.

Aaaah - thank you, I was being a bit thick there.

Yes, well, i may add farm and equine ologies in the future, but really need to see more equine and farm animal vets, else it spreads the content too thinly.

A little bit of progress on the ologies.

Very pleased with the way dentistry has progressed; I feel like that section is starting to have real substance.

Next on the list is medicine, where I am very pleased that we have the ever-helpful Andrew Kent and Andrea Tarr as our first contributing experts.

Meanwhile, Liz and I came up with what I think is quite a good wheeze today. From time to time, we're going to pick out discussion threads that we (well, Liz mainly, she's the vet!) think are potentially the most interesting / valuable. We're then a) going to send the OP a bottle b) going to make the maximum efforts behind the scenes to get as many members/vets as possible to come and contribute to the discussion, on the basis that a) we have transparent expert input and b) it will count towards CPD requirement, but more than anything else, it should be interesting / something they can learn from.

As we work behind the scenes to encourage more involvement, please could everyone be particularly welcoming and friendly to new posters.

Michael Woodhouse sorry, meant to reply to this earlier and got diverted. I know you are leg-pulling, but I didn't quite understand what you mean. We split large animals into farm and separately equine. Are you saying ideally it should be broken down into pigs/cattle? That is certainly possible in the future, but I think we need to get some more farm vets involved before it would make sense.

anaesthesia and pathology interest me the most, no contest.

Can't believe dermatology has 2 votes out of 8; most boring discipline ever to be dreamt up, although it is a large and important part of our work.

I don't really have a favourite, but dermatology (pictures) lends well to this medium

It depends what's your favourite and what you need to learn more about, they aren't the same
