(Mainly due to its use in human suicide to be fair.) And now metaldehyde will be banned from Spring

RE: Poisons slowly disappearing

Thanks Jane, that's really helpful.

RE: Poisons slowly disappearing

Hi Linda, it's a fairly common toxicosis here in Australia (unfortunately these baits are marketed as 'pet friendly') but I can't recall seeing it in the UK so not ignorant at all.

This case series was written by two former colleagues: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1751-0813.2009.00451.x I might still have the full paper hidden somewhere on my hard drive but in summary it causes profound GI ulceration and GI distress with the potential for nasty stricture formation if not treated early enough. Another issue with delayed treatment is oxidative organ damage.

Presentation can be misleading as dogs will commonly show moderate GI distress within the first few hours following which appears to resolve spontaneously within the first 24hrs so many go untreated initially.

Treatment is very effective if given early enough: chelation with desferrioxamine CRI until serum iron levels returned to normal. You can also judge the efficacy of treatment by monitoring urine colour. Local human laboratories in Australia will run serum iron analysis with a very quick turnaround. Adjunct treatment is aimed at GI protection (proton pump inhibitors +/- H2 antagonists) and supportive care (analgesia, iv fluids). Many of the intoxications I dealt with required several days of chelation which ended up being pretty costly.
