I have a patient with a lacerated 3rd eyelid/nictitating membrane booked in for surgery tomorrow as it is everted over the cornea and causing some irritation.
I'll have a closer look under anaesthetic but it looks beyond reasonable repair

RE: Feline 3rd eyelid trauma

I removed an entire third eyelid in a cat with a melanoma, healed well and no subsequent problems!

RE: Feline 3rd eyelid trauma

I'd remove the whole thing. No point in just lopping off the bad bit and running the risk of later adhesions and distortions which would just get you back to square one.

However if you can’t repair I would consider removing in its entirety to avoid any sharp remaining bits of cartilage behind to cause further issues.

In general most third eyelids should be repairable as long as no deficit and you get to them before they fibrose but you will not get the margin to form again neatly as it usually breaks down post surgery.

RE: Feline 3rd eyelid trauma

My experience is that amputation is going to do sod all to the tear production. If the third eyelid is beyond sensible repair then remove what you have to.

Warn the owner that it is a structure that is better kept if possible but they can do without if necessary. Also warn small risk of dry eye.
