Don't do ferrets from the flank. When in season the ovarian ligament is too friable to safely ligate the bottom one from the flank. Don't do when in anoestrus as too much risk of leaving ovarian tissue (with fatal results ) They do'nt seem in pain with norocarp analgesia, but adding the opiate is interesting . I will do it next time. Thanks

I'd say remember to start incision more caudally than for midline cat spay though - usually go in midway between umbilicus and pubis

Re: Ferrets

But why not flank approach to reduce risk of disembowelling?!

Re: Ferrets

yes exactly as speying a cat midline, careful with uterus and ovarian vessels as not as strong

Re: Ferrets

I do a lot, as I do the work for Swansea Ferret Rescue. I give norocarp for analgesia, and mask down with isoflo. Midline incision. 1.5 metric vicryl to close, but I do interupted as given half a chance, they are horrors for disembowelling themselves

Close with 1.5 metric vicryl - simple continuous in the linea alba and subcuticular in the skin. We have an electrosurgery system in the clinic which I love for most surgery but emphatically will not use for ferret laparotomies - the abdominal wall is far too thin and you'll be inside the abdomen (and possibly one of a number of hollow organs into the bargain) before you realise it if you're not careful.

Cheers,
