But can anyone tell me if there is a "fancy" term for this (to differentiate from pruritic/itchy skin), as in to describe a patient with papular dermatitis that was acutely painful to touch

RE: Term for "painful skin"
See https://journals.lww.com/pain/Abstract/2018/07000/Alloknesis_and_hyperknesis_mechanisms,_assessment.3.aspx
Thanks Robert!

I've only read the abstract, but I'll try to read the rest later this afternoon to delve into the world of alloknesis and hyperknesis :-)

On reading the abstract I think these terms relate to pruritus or "itch" as the abstract terms it. What I mean by painful, non-pruritic, lesional skin is that there were lesions present that were painful to touch (dog presented for neck pain by owner as when went near neck yelped and turned to bite), but without any of biting/rubbing/scratching/licking at skin.

Cornell consultant has "skin pain"

RE: Term for "painful skin"
Think I'll stick to "painful, non-pruritic, skin lesions" which is hopefully the least ambiguous
When I hear "allodynia", I think of pain on non-lesional skin to non-noxious stimulus (such as touch), I think "dermatodynia" might be read in a similar fashion.

I would go with this - guess it's not greek for 'painful skin' but it is a painful response to a non-noxious stimulus.

RE: Term for "painful skin"

Allodynia?

RE: Term for "painful skin"
"Dermatodynia"
