There's a generic human liquid paracetamol, very cheap. Just use that, buy it from your wholesaler. Why are people over complicating things?

I really didn't know this. As it isn't a POM I didn't think it was necessary. I haven't done it often but it was a referral centre who gave me the idea. I will make sure I prescribe properly from now on. I have also just got some generic suspension to be able to dispense smaller doses without telling people to have to source it elsewhere.

You'd have to write a prescription and charge apporpriately for it. Otherwise it makes a mockery of the entire licenceing process. It's not a dog medicine.

My worry with suggesting to clients that they buy Calpol at a pharmacy is that if they tell the pharmacist they are buying it for their dog the pharmacist will have to refuse to sell it to them as it isn't licensed for that use.

There is a soluble paracetamol available that might be easier to administer? Having said that, I was warned that teach 500mg tablet contains the daily recommended allowance for salt for a person so maybe not a good suggestion after all?

That's good to know. My own dog is very arthritic and can't tolerate NSAIDs. We have him on 16mg/kg dose (1 tablet BID) at the moment but I might consider increasing that and seeing how he gets on.

So do a lot of people, but I really don't know why so many in the profession latch on to this unreferenced number. 10mg/kg just feels very convenient. Whilst I appreciate it's off licence (5 days use) I've had dogs on full Pardale V dose for years with no ill effect. It would be one things if BSAVA referenced efficacy an toxicity studies in the formulary.

I use the 10mg/kg dose that's given in the formulary for long term use so the suspension makes this easier for very small dogs. Half a Pardale V would work out at 40mg/kg for a 5kg dog and I wouldn't be comfortable with that long term.

Why? You can dose the smallest dog with Pardale V?

I find the injectable formulation very useful as adjunctive analgesia and feel I can justify the use under the cascade.
