Just looking for some advice regarding liquid paracetamol in dogs. I'm looking to get some into the clinic and having difficulty. Wondering if anyone is using human liquid paracetamol and if so what one?

You'd have to write a prescription and charge apporpriately for it. Otherwise it makes a mockery of the entire licenceing process. It's not a dog medicine.

RE: liquid paracetamol
I've just told people to buy Calpol, to be honest. I do have a generic one in stock now to dispense small amounts where necessary but it's the same strength as the Calpol SixPlus.
My worry with suggesting to clients that they buy Calpol at a pharmacy is that if they tell the pharmacist they are buying it for their dog the pharmacist will have to refuse to sell it to them as it isn't licensed for that use.

RE: liquid paracetamol

I get clients to buy sugar free infant calpol here

RE: liquid paracetamol

There is a soluble paracetamol available that might be easier to administer?
That's good to know. My own dog is very arthritic and can't tolerate NSAIDs. We have him on 16mg/kg dose (1 tablet BID) at the moment but I might consider increasing that and seeing how he gets on.

RE: liquid paracetamol
I use the 10mg/kg dose that's given in the formulary for long term use so the suspension makes this easier for very small dogs
So do a lot of people, but I really don't know why so many in the profession latch on to this unreferenced number. 10mg/kg just feels very convenient. Whilst I appreciate it's off licence (5 days use) I've had dogs on full Pardale V dose for years with no ill effect. It would be one things if BSAVA referenced efficacy an toxicity studies in the formulary.
Half a Pardale V would work out at 40mg/kg for a 5kg dog and I wouldn't be comfortable with that long term.
I would!

RE: liquid paracetamol

Thanks, is it just the human adult preparation you use?

RE: liquid paracetamol
You can dose the smallest dog with Pardale V?
You can dose the smallest dog with Pardale V?

I find the injectable formulation very useful as adjunctive analgesia and feel I can justify the use under the cascade.
