for b) I tend to lean more towards a moisturising type product (oatmeal) and often a leave-in conditioning product rather than a shampoo. Find oral omega supplementation improves some as well (anecdote alert: according to owner feedback). Generally would advise once weekly for maintenance, varying by case.

RE: Topical Tx for sup pyoderma

Unless there is a fungal infection, malaseb is an expensive form of hibiscrub.

Most of the other shampoos any better than a mild soapy one like baby shampoo??

RE: Topical Tx for sup pyoderma
As the cause was usually fleas or diet
Then it's not atopy!

For superficial pyoderma I'd treat at least twice a week with chlorhexidine
For atopy cases where secondary pyoderma results I'd consider malaseb/chlorhexidine/coatex medicated every half to 4 weeks (depending on results), where microbial overgrowth isn't a massive feature I've used aloe/oatmeal or alleryml or duoxo calm shampoos, but be aware there is some body of evidence that says just rinsing the dog with water to rinse out reduce dermal exposure to allergens helps
Most, if not all, "washes" or baths just made the irritation worse
Not sure I'd agree; I'd say occasionally the shampoo will cause more irritation but not mostly

RE: Topical Tx for sup pyoderma

As things you culture or find on any allergic skin are just along for the ride I used to treat the resultant "pathogens", which aren't, with intermittent steroids, with obvious temporary guaranteed patient relief in 12 hours.

As the cause was usually fleas or diet results were often very good eventually once clients were educated, and the cause was eliminated.

Most, if not all, "washes" or baths just made the irritation worse, IMHO and didn't achieve anything at all.

RE: Topical Tx for sup pyoderma

I recommend chlorhexidine shampoo's (surgical scrubs), every two to three days, leave on for ten minutes then rinse well. Decrease the frequency as the condition improves.

Usually works a charm and clients don't feel ripped off by an £18 bottle of shampoo.
