Returned all to abdomen and spayed (broad ligament fat non-viable).
Concern however about distal ileum - last 2-3cm very congested and serosal surface had some fibrin

RE: Ileo-caecal-colic compromise

The thinking is the improved risk/benefit of early diagnosis (i.e. you must do follow up radiographs) if there is bowel perforation/obstruction is that you will diagnose and open up quickly and there will be very little leakage, compared to waiting for the dog to become sick with it's undiagnosed bowel perforation.

I've never tried Conway orally.

For the record, other suggestions I have heard of, but never been brave enough to try are pneumogastrogram and pnuemocolonography, i.e. using air as contrast, but I presume have fallen from favour because ultrasound is so widespread. Also, in your case, there would be air around the gut after your first surgery, so it wouldn't be helpful.

You wouldn't want it swilling round the abdomen if the bowel was leaking. If in doubt, use Conray or something instead.

RE: Ileo-caecal-colic compromise

Thanks Jill - sounds like a good plan but I thought in the back of my mind barium was irritant if bowel is compromised? Panic over as she has large volume soft stool and abdominal tuck is much reduced today (was gaunt looking yesterday) - she is now home and much brighter, back to being very awkward to handle which is her normal behaviour!

RE: Ileo-caecal-colic compromise

I might get shouted down for this suggestion, but how about giving some Barium and take a few radiographs over the next few hours to see if there is any onward motility? It would also allow early diagnosis of leakage, if you are unlucky enough to find that the bowel you left is non viable.
