I have a german short haired pointer (4yo MN) who seems prone to getting split/broken nails.
He has been on onychotin for approx 8w but came in again today with a split nail.
Any other suggestions at all?
Many thanks

The regrowth is then small and brittle. I have found a combination of prednisolone and high dose EFA's works well for these. The nails that seem to split horizontally I find more of a challenge and would continue the onychotin for at least 3-4 months to see if it starts to help. Regular claw clipping seems to help.

RE: Supplements/other suggestions for dog with split nails

I have another patient who I think has lupoid onychodystrophy but his nails seem to shed from the base/attachment to the skin, whereas this dog tends to get cracked or split nails with the crack going from the distal nail proximally, so unsure if this is immune mediated. Pretty sure this owner would not let me take P3 for histo anyway, but if the problem carries on then this disease could be a possibility. Currently one nail on the left fore but was a back foot last time. his nails do tend to get overlong and perhaps this isn’t helping, but he is a very tricky dog to clip nails! Perhaps I need to give the supplements longer and get the owner working on trying to trim the nails at home....

RE: Supplements/other suggestions for dog with split nails

Could he have lupus nails?

https://veterinary-practice.com/article/symmetrical-lupoid-onychodystrophysm

If so, then I'm undecided what I think the best approach is.

If not, then I'd keep the nails trimmed short ( as atraumatically as possible ideally) and would consider giving some supplements aimed at nail health, but might need to give them for few months if going to be effective.

Which nails is it that have split?
