I am wondering if anyone has a protocol for handwashing after being in contact with parvo positive cases. This is in relation to washing hands after removing gloves or if there is a tear in the glove and washing of hands is needed to prevent

RE: washing hands after parvo cases

Got one in currently that arrived OOH on Tuesday night after being treated for gastroenteritis for a few days at a local vets that doesn't to their own OOH.

I was on back up, when I was told there was a 5 month old dog with vomiting and diarrhoea coming in I told the vet on call to keep the dog in the car until a parvo test had been done. Suprise surprise, it's positive.

Original vet is refuting this and saying it's a false positive and the dog has a foreign body.

RE: washing hands after parvo cases

we are in rural Shropshire and have had a big parvo outbreak this summer. This outbreak was very acute and we lost two with sepsis.
You lucky thing. We get a few a year, and they often don't have any money either.
I haven't seen a case for years but we had one a locum saw 18 months ago sadly he failed to treat it properly and it died. I found Virbagen Omega wonderful, it is expensive but they're better in 3 days so it saves more in hospital fees that it costs.

The fact that have got parvo and the owner having no money are of course intrinsically linked as they've probably not been vaccinated for that reason, the owner got it cheap from some dodgy dealer and lives in deprived area where there is a high incidence of similar cases so there is a high concentration of field virus.

The last one I saw belonged to a 'traveller' who of course had money but didn't want to pay. I told her if she left a deposit I'd treat it until the money ran out and then she'd have to pay again for the next stage. She came out with the well worn line that if I loved animals I'd treat if for nothing and added that I had an obligation to treat it so I was discriminating against her. I agreed to euthanase it for free just to get rid of her and gave her the details of the RCVS if she wanted to report me.

RE: washing hands after parvo cases
Yeah, it's not that simple. It depends on exact concentration, (and length of exposure).

Sterilium is an alcohol gel. Ethanol 85%.

Not sure if the butan-2-one, the tetradecan-1-ol, or the propan-1-ol have any influence on spectrum of activity against non-enveloped viruses.

So if in doubt choose Sterilium.

But always look at the label of your alcohol. ( )

Sometimes in case of need I have used Virkon, which also does things to your skin but not too horribly, except with repeated exposure.
