First time poster here.
I had a strange occurrence yesterday after administering an Intervet Nobivac rabies vaccine to a 6 year old F/N Shih Tzu. This occurred during a home visit as part of the export process from Australia to the UK

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination
Could you have irritated a nerve?
That was my first thought. I was surprised she didn’t react on injection if that was the case. Hopefully no long term nerve damage done?

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination

Could you have irritated a nerve?

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination

That brief clip looks more like partial seizure activity to me rather than pain etc. I would agree that the timing seems too quick to be directly related to the vaccination, but could be related to stress, handling etc.

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination

It may have been. I have noticed a lot of dogs scratching following this vaccine which I warn owners. However this dog didn't whine or scratch and she seemed otherwise very calm, as if she was unaware of the tremors.

I managed to get a short video which I will try to post.

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination

Could it have just been discomfort? Thinking of those ones that turn to look and scratch at the vaccination site after (admittedly mainly noted with L4 which seems to sting slightly)...

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination
I would suspect there is a link.
I had one dog that vomited a minute after a first Cartrophen injection (the data sheets state vomiting is one of the side effects but even a minute is really too short a time). It did the same on the second so on the third I asked the owner if he wanted me to give the dog an injection of Cerenia first then wait a while. He declined and the dog didn't vomit. If we'd given it the Cerenia we would have thought it was that which stopped the vomiting and repeated it each subsequent injection. No other dog, including that one, has ever vomited again after Cartrophen injections.

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination

I would suspect there is a link.
Almost invariably they have been back to normal within half an hour or so. None have ever come to harm.

This could be a stress reaction of course.

I do report them and it does not prevent me vaccinating in subsequent years but advise they are vaccinated in the morning and on a weekday.

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination

I probably would report it, although it looks likely it was a co-incidence, it does sound like a partial seizure.

As co-incidences go, I once was just about to vaccinate a pup, when the owner said, 'Oh, she had a little bit of diarrhoea this morning'. I put the syringe down to listen and then suddenly the pup squirted and flopped over. I thanked God that I hadn't actually given the vaccine as it would have looked like a reaction, and all my fault...

RE: Strange adverse effect in a dog following rabies vaccination

I think you can be 100% confident that this had nothing to with the vaccine, even if you'd given it IV nothing could work that fast and it had a seizure of some sort which may have been related to the stress of the procedure and maybe to the previous illness or was totally coincidental.
