I recommend it as per the licence, but I know that many (most?) bitches probably don't receive it. However, as the protocol was formulated before the days of multi-modal parasite control products like Stronghold there's no reason to believe these wouldn't be as effective (provided they're licenced for use in pregnant animals).

RE: 25mg/kg fenbendazole daily from day 40 pregnancy

[quote user="robloxley"]

However, I still recommend this when I have the odd occasion to see a hobby breeder.

RE: 25mg/kg fenbendazole daily from day 40 pregnancy

My understanding was that it is designed to prevent trans-placental transmission to the unborn pups (and also transmission within the colostrum in the first days of life). Dormant larvae widespread in the tissues from infection at a young age, immune suppression of pregnancy allows these larvae to recommence development and migration through the placenta can occur (I believe in cats there is no placental transmission, just in colostrum).

It always seems a little OTT to me as I wouldn't generally advise against worming pups at 2 weeks of age based on the dam having been treated...so possibly not much is gained?
