[/quote]My experience is that the pups did come out stronger and bigger but, I'm sure as you of all people David would be quick to point out, this is very subjective and impossible to prove as you couldn't run a double blinded placebo trial due to too many variables. However, as the protocol was formulated before the days of multi-modal parasite control products like Stronghold there's no reason to believe these wouldn't be as effective (provided they're licenced for use in pregnant animals).

I purposefully don't have any breeders anymore but when I did many refused the Panacur regime because a) cost and b) the puppies came out so much bigger and healthier that the bitch was more likely to suffer from dystocia which is a terrible condemnation of their breeding stock and vindicates my decision to discourage breeders from my books. However, I still recommend this when I have the odd occasion to see a hobby breeder.

My understanding was that it is designed to prevent trans-placental transmission to the unborn pups (and also transmission within the colostrum in the first days of life). Dormant larvae widespread in the tissues from infection at a young age, immune suppression of pregnancy allows these larvae to recommence development and migration through the placenta can occur (I believe in cats there is no placental transmission, just in colostrum).

It always seems a little OTT to me as I wouldn't generally advise against worming pups at 2 weeks of age based on the dam having been treated...so possibly not much is gained?
