Moraxella spp isolated from culture. No response to treatment with doxycycline or Isathal eye ointment. Any ideas please?

RE: Rabbit eyelid

Good stuff, feel free to update

Blepharitis/conjunctivitis developed in both rabbits 2 weeks after myxi vaccination and 1 day after castration. The lesions are localised to the conjunctival aspect of the lids. we did attempt to lance one of the lesions but they appear to be solid. I also wondered about treponema and they have had a course of depocillin. There are no other lesions anywhere and the rabbits are well. We will probably go with biopsy next as we need to know for re-homing

RE: Rabbit eyelid

I think if its 2 rabbits affected its likely there is some infectious component.

I would chop and biopsy personally, sending another sterile sample for culture. That will give you your diagnosis.

May be a consequence of the conjunctivitis so NSAIDs often help, plus antibiotics if marked/chronic inflammation. Moraxella crops up as a commensal so may be incidental. Really large ones that may be impinging on the eye or are uncomfortable can be lanced under light sedation and local.

If tissue swellings and not meibomian in origin then it would be interesting to biopsy and see if there is any evidence of cause- myxi and syphilis tend to affect external surface with more diffuse swelling. Mycobacteria, lymphoma, pasteurella may also be possibilities but again would be unusual presentation.

I see a lot of rabbits with often quite large swelling of the third eyelid that doesn't seem to cause any problems. Would be interested to see Mark and Marie's opinions.

RE: Rabbit eyelid

If there are other lesions on the body then I would second myxo (a survivor) and would not completely rule it out. We had a survivor this summer. It had been regularly vaccinated until about five years ago. It was unwell but continued to eat some favourite foods.

Made steady if lumpy improvement over the next two weeks.

RE: Rabbit eyelid

Have you tried injection into the conjunctival sac?

RE: Rabbit eyelid

Could it be cutaneous myxomatosis?
