SCCs tend to be very slowly progressive and as a rule they are difficult to spot in the earliest stages as they are usually inaccessible under the tongue and owners don't bring them in until the cat is in dire straits so it has probably been there for many months, even years.

RE: old DSH with red inflamed , ulcerated tongue

finally persuaded the owners to do more tests- and it turns out the cat was insured all along !! apparently were worried their premiums would go up if they used the insurance- in an ancient nearly dead cat!!! biopsy has come back as Squamous cell carcinoma - no surprise there other than it really has not progressed on over 8 months

Is this bilateral or unilateral? IME SCCs don't occur on the side of the tongue more often on the ventral aspect but never say never. Sadly, if the teeth are really OK, you can't do biopsies (and there's probably little point if they cant afford any surgery or other treatment) and corticosteroids don't work you're going nowhere.
Had one recently that nurses wanted to pts, both sides of tongue, drooling. Biopsied. Chronic stomatitis.

Re op, what steroids? If oral then discount. Give a good (0.1ml/kg) depo and some covenia and reassess.

RE: old DSH with red inflamed , ulcerated tongue

Photos would be helpful. Presume no dental X-rays? Wouldnt assume not teeth related so you could try pain relief, buprenorphine transmucosally they can manage that? Or if eating a bit and hydration ok meloxicam. Worth a try if running out of options.

Otherwise consider nausea- try maropitant. And/or mirtazipine and B12.

18 year old extremely thin cat that I have inherited from another practice with 6 moth history of drooling and inappetance, she is a witch and extremely difficult to handle, we sedated and did full bloods - all absolutely normal, teeth not bad but side of tongue very red but not ulcerated, minimal response to steroids and various antibiotics tried elsewhere, rest of mouth looked normal larynx looks normal, she is in a state as drool all over her and was matted as cannot groom/ does not want to.

any ideas what I could try , we have basically used up any money the owners have doing bloods so please don't suggest biopsies etc , just wondering if any one has seen something similar with a good outcome, #

I initially thought it had to be a squamous cell tumour but it is not changing/developing and in the last month she has actually gained some weight .
I hate these cases. Goodness knows how much they've spent on 6 months of treatment that hasn't worked. They will let you sedate and take bloods but won't do a biopsy!! This is screaming neoplasia - maybe they are in denial. Not a criticism of you btw, I've had owners like this but I agree with Martin this is going nowhere.

RE: old DSH with red inflamed , ulcerated tongue

Pictures please: and mobiles are just as good !!

RE: old DSH with red inflamed , ulcerated tongue

Is this bilateral or unilateral?
