It seems it is the telephone operators who have the greatest variation but to be fair they don't always get accurate information. They send out the 'Leave Me Alone' poster every spring but still tell the MOP to take it to a vet instead of leave it where it is and its mother will come back for it.

RE: RSPCA payments for initial emergency treatment

Very different entities and with very different attitudes.

One cat that ended up residing at Russell Acres was sealed in a box for the bin men. The RSPCA lady suggested the MOP took it back to where it was found!!!

When questioned as to whether they should seal it back in the box, the reply was 'no you cannot do that!'

Oddly they wanted to get involved when the local paper wanted to write an article on the cat. I told them to go forth and multiply! Amazing what potential publicity can do for the RSPCA.

An organisation that is a mix of the dedicated and genuine and the downright dreadful IMO.

RE: RSPCA payments for initial emergency treatment

Here in Scotland we have the SSPCA, and I have to say they seem to be much better! Injured animals are usually brought in by an inspector, who can, if necessary, euthanase small casualties themselves. They have their own vets, but sometimes come to me outwith their own vet hours, or in cases where there may be cruelty/ negligence for an impartial view. They always give me a job number and I have never had an invoice unpaid or questioned. I am happy to have a good relationship with the SSPCA, and I'm always surprised to hear all the gripes about the RSCPA, although I am aware they are completely separate entities.

RE: RSPCA payments for initial emergency treatment
It costs little to administer essential treatment to wildlife though and I see that as part of service to the community.
True especially as there is often nothing than can be practically done but one would think that they might want to encourage treatment of an endangered species.
Be careful, RSPCA will happily give out log numbers for cases that will never be covered by the RSPCA/BVA agreement, e.g. injured baby birds.
I know, I don't ask MOPs to get a log number for these and I rarely charge them if they do especially as we have a local bird rescue person.
However I have great respect for the work done by the inspectors in often difficult circumstances.
Again I agree its HQ that's the problem, even local branches try their hardest under overwhelming circumstances with no central funding.

Anyway, despite out efforts, the hedgehog carked it before it got as far as Tiggywinkles.

RE: RSPCA payments for initial emergency treatment
A MOP brought in a hedgehog found in the road and obtained an RSPCA code
Perhaps that was and still is the idea.....It would be a bit more honest and transparent to just say we don’t want to use our funds for first line treatment of wildlife and strays.
