Problem is she started her first season on 5th June and followed a textbook pattern: vulval swelling then bleeding for 3 weeks

RE: Bitch with persistent oestrus

It is fairly common in young females with their first season and I would just let it run its course.
What bothers me is the neutrophilia and pyrexia.

If you are fortunate enough to have breeder clients ( as opposed to puppy farmers) you get a fair few split seasons. Please note sarcasm .... it is hard work!

On advice from a specialist I have ended the persistent/ endlessly split season with a course of norethisterone - 1 tab daily for 28 days - when they stop there is a rebound season that is usually normal. Cant remember all the details, but you also have to cover with antibiotics as they pretty much turn into an open pyo at first, but then all Ok and got a nice litter at the end of it.

However I'd rather spay!

RE: Bitch with persistent oestrus

Pus is generally culture negative from what I remember - all those WBC toxins and the bacteria already phagocytosed and intracellular. As Dinu says, you are likely to only get vaginal flora.

RE: Bitch with persistent oestrus
It can't be that common if I've not been aware of it in 40+ years!
May or may not be related? Swab for C&S as Clive suggested? But at this age it's unlikely to find anything else than vaginal flora.

And again spaying them seemed to find quite normal uterus and ovaries so a bit mysterious!

No access to HRT type patches? Anecdote but a vet first practice I worked in had a terrier pup who ate her contraceptive pill packet containing almost a month of supply. No immediate I’ll effect, but her first season was when she was 3....

RE: Bitch with persistent oestrus

+1 for getting speyed sooner rather than later.

Since then I've seen a couple of similar cases, having never seen it in 20 years..

RE: Bitch with persistent oestrus
It is fairly common in young females with their first season and I would just let it run its course. It is fairly common in young females with their first season and I would just let it run its course. You could always use Chorulon to attempt and trigger ovulation but not sure it's really worth it.
