So many options - DR or CR, fixed generator on a stand or hand held.
I like the speed of DR but no flexibility of plate size.
I like the portability of a hand held generator but more difficult to fine

RE: Dental X ray
I chose not to have these but to have extra size 4s instead.
If it needs replacement then I would probably go for a good quality hand held unit. They don't come with particularly different H&S issues.

RE: Dental X ray
I like the portability of a hand held generator but more difficult to fine tune angles.
I have a Nomad handheld and really like it. Fine-tuning angles is tricky at first but gets easier with practice.(And, as Bob says, it doesn't always matter). Radiation safety is really no more tricky than with any other generator, if you follow the instructions. But if you don't need to dodge from room to room, and you've got the space (quite a serious consideration for most surgeries) then exploit the advantages of a good ceiling mounted generator. Depending on the geometry of your operatory, a wall mount may be fine (you need to consider very carefully where you mount it; it's very frustrating if it doesn't quite reach).(A floor stand is a chuffing nuisance, always getting in the way)
I like the speed of DR but no flexibility of plate size.
That's why you really need both (like me, smirk ). But seriously, it depends partly on what sort of work you are doing. If you are doing a lot of endodontics, the delay involved in CR will drive you mad. If you are only doing periodontics, a little bit of a wait for the images won't matter too much (and the even better image quality of CR may be useful). If you do a lot of rabbits, you'll want CR. This can be done with your "main practice" CR processor if it has a device for putting through size 2 and size 4 dental sensors. iM3 do some special rabbit sensors (but you could make your own if you don't mind cutting up a full-size sensor).

It is not necessary to have a tooth exactly right for the image to be of use. A slightly stretched canine can still be examined, better still tweak it to make it better.

We have two skulls, one a cat (of origin I chose not to question) and a dog fox which has amazing dentition and was killed as vermin. These are actually a bit more difficult to X-ray than the live patient but you can play as long as you like to become familiar with technique.

The basics of interpretation can be learned on a short course or I am sure on-line. The beauty of digital radiographs is you can send them instantly to a friendly expert!

RE: Dental X ray
Has anyone any recommendations?
Make sure you get a proper demo of whatever system and software and see what works better. The speed and ease of fine tuning of DR was nice; on the course I went on most participants swayed to using the DR rather than CR setup for that reason.
Likewise a non-handheld generator for the reason you suggest.

RE: Dental X ray
We put in a fixed unit from iM3 with a CR processor and are very happy with the image quality and ease of use of the unit. It is worth contacting dental vets in Scotland regarding courses on radiography as well - use of the equipment and interpretation.
we got the same and work with a veterianry dentist and he’s pleased the Images we produce. iM3 give basic training as well as poster guides. The only concern with handheld devices is the radiation protection issues.

RE: Dental X ray

We put in a fixed unit from iM3 with a CR processor and are very happy with the image quality and ease of use of the unit.
