Firstly I'd like to introduce myself. I am the Veterinary Technical Services Manager at Dechra Veterinary Products. I'd also like to clarify some of the information in the recent posts if I may, and reassure you that for Vetoryl 10mg capsules both the current datasheet and the summary of product characteristics (SPC) are up to date:

I should like to explain the datasheet/SPC. Vetoryl is not licensed in dogs less than 3kg and there is obviously a greater potential to overdose a smaller dog. The 10mg Vetoryl capsule is available in the UK through wholesalers; however, it is not licensed as a starting dose for dogs less than 3kg bodyweight. This is because only one of the dogs in the clinical trials was less than 3kg and so we do not have sufficient data to prove the safety of the drug in these smaller dogs. For information this <3kg dog was successfully treated during the study. According to the datasheet, 10 mg capsules should be used in dogs that require particularly small doses of trilostane, and to assist with dosage adjustments. In clinical studies, most dogs were stabilised on doses between 2-10mg/kg/day. A small number of animals may require doses in excess of 10mg/kg.

We do not recommend that the capsules be split due to the potential for hypersensitivity reactions, ingestion etc.. The drug also has anti-progesterone properties and may decrease testosterone synthesis in humans. Please see the special precautions section of the SPC.

I hadn't noticed that the 10mg capsules weren't listed as an option. That's what you get from trusting the data sheets on-line!

Obviously depends on bodyweight but they do now provide 10mg capsules - given prior to these i have had <10kg dogs on 60mg capsules i think as long as you are careful and warn the owners of the (admittedly tiny) risk of adverse effects this is better than splitting the capsule.
