Wife seemed keen, husband less so as "so-and-so always rings his after 6mo and they're fine"!

The whole thing left me feeling a bit sickened and shocked, it had never occurred to me that someone would think it was ok to put rings on a 1yr old and then leave it 3 months before acknowledging there might be an issue!

[/quote]

Horrible, horrible story - perhaps you could suggest to the husband that he tries the same procedure on himself to see what it is like, before inflicting it on his animals?

(In the UK ringing has to be done before 1 w of age).

RE: Farm ethics/castrating via rings ages

A New Zealand vet friend of mine used to take pleasure in asking this question. "What is the shortest book available to buy in Australia?" Answer "The Australian book of animal welfare". I think there might have a been an iota of truth in this "joke" in the past but, hopefully, less so in the present day. Whether it is always possible to adopt the best welfare practices in the very extensive production systems that occur in some parts of Australia (and in some other parts of the world too) is a moot point.

RE: Farm ethics/castrating via rings ages

As far as I'm aware, Australian animal welfare law is similar to the UK (though it seems to vary state by state) It appears that in some states castration over six months must (legally) be performed by a veterinarian, so might be worth checking what laws apply where you are and putting the fear into them having a quiet word.

Welfare "Code of practice" recommends rings aren't used over 2 weeks of age but doesn't appear to be legally binding.

There are always going to be idiots who will take their neighbours advice over a professional, I hope they turn out to be few and far between in your area!
