Hi Niall,

This was reported as an abstract at the Small Animal Medicine Society (SAMsoc) pre-congress day in April by one of the medicine residents from RVC but I don't think it is yet published. From discussions around that I understand that another centre has also seen a similar case and there is likely a case report in publication...

Not had a chance to discuss it yet. Lesion was like a flattened verrucoid lesion. Not erythematous , nor pruritic initially. Initial punch biopsy we took for diagnosis indicated MCT and showed some of the leishmania bodies.

Neither dog nor owner nor the in contact dogs have travelled abroad. Dog bred in Winchester and rarely , if ever, has left the area of the New Forest. Plenty of mosquitoes and other flying , biting insects around in the New Forest though. They live inside the New Forest National Park boundary.

RE: Leishmaniasis in a nine month british born dog

[quote user="janine redman"]

With respect, you do not yet have a diagnosis so I would be cautious about "premature closure" on this.

It would be unusual (although clearly not impossible) to see a mast cell tumour in such a young dog and also unusual to see leishmania in a non-travelled dog. The combination therefore seems even more unusual!

Have any of the owners other dogs travelled? The main other reports of leishmania in the UK have been in dogs who have lived with travelled dogs.

The PCR is sensible, as would be leishmania serology, but I might also ask for the pathology to be reviewed by somebody else.

There was a case report in Germany with confirmed transmission after a dog fight.
