Apparently 3 weeks to three months with an average of 5 weeks.

Recommended to keep away from puppies, unvaccinated dogs and the immunosuppressed for four months according to:

Some initially appear to be little more than a case of kennel cough so really easy to miss in a shelter situation.

Yes this was always the tragedy with distemper, the apparent recovery from the cough, diarrhoea and discharginge from eyes and nose then several weeks later seizures and chorea. Heartbreaking.

Some cases can have very light respiratory or gastro-intestinal form, maybe a bit of green ocular or nasal discharge and nothing more. Easy to miss in a busy shelter.

I had someone from the rescue organisation on the phone saying how the dog had been tested, how there hadn't been any other signs, how did it happen etc etc. I probably shouldn't have needed to post here but it's been helpful, thank you. She's been PTS.

Was coming on to say distemper . Sad that a disease I had previously never seen in clinical practice (but read about in James Herriot books, much to the amusement of the professor who grilled me about it in my final oral exams!) has reared its head again, thanks to the fashion for importing these poor dogs.

Another one for distemper. Not had a single case resolve satisfactorily but last case was many years ago. Myoclonus is a symptom and seizure activity is as likely to follow as recovery.

Thank you, that's really helpful. I've since found that the rhythmical contraction is called myoclonus, and it may well resolve over a few months.

We had one with classical distemper symptoms which was of course fully vaccinated and symptomless when it left Romania a few days before. The rescue people went into denial and got quite nasty about it.

I won't start pontificating on why these people import these dogs when UK rescue centres are full to breaking point.

100% final phase of distemper which in some cases can occur weeks after the initial respiratory form. Some do improve but most cases are permanently affected. Some do have a decent QoL even though permanently bouncing.
