Tangent of: RE: Export to USA

I feel I should mention that Taiwan is an independent country and not part of China.

No limbo. Part of China. We leased it and the lease ran out. (Well, to be exact, we leased the New Territories, while the Hong Kong island itself was ours, but that would be a non-viable entity on its own). The Chinese rulers assured us they would run it differently from the rest of the "People's Republic".

RE: Taiwan

In what "limbo" shall we place Hong Kong?

No, not remotely like any of those.

Tibet, incidentally, was sort of arguably part of China, but had also been effectively sovereign and independent for a long time. The "People's Republic" invaded and seized the land in the usual brutal and ruthless Communist manner in the mid-Fifties. I remember it. You won't find anything about this in most history books. Look in the Oxford History of the Twentieth Century for example (and there's a book that ought to be authoritative and reliable, surely) and there's no mention of it, in any terms at all. Why not? Because the Chinese government made it plain that if there were, the book would have no sale in China, nor would any other book or product from the OUP or any associated companies, ever. For the same reason, you won't find Tibet in an atlas, only the physical geographical feature the Tibetan Plain.

A little later on, the Chinese invaded India apparently intending to annex the land between Tibet and the Brahmaputra river. But after a tense and worrying period they went home again.

RE: Taiwan

It can be argued that Tibet ought to be an independent country but it has been administered by the PRC since the 1950's.
