I just wondered if anyone had any experience of exporting pets to the US? We have a chap who came in last week regarding his cat who we advised to contact defra, and the advice he received was:
- DEFRA can provide no advice or export certification

RE: Export to USA
Seems the Embassy is practicing 'Trump-speak' - say one thing but mean the opposite.
Many of the differences are between federal and state requirements, and the differences between entry and residence requirements esp re rabies in dogs.

RE: Export to USA

I looked into exporting a dog to the USA the other day - quite confusing:

If you go to the USA Embassy in London website there is a section 'Travelling to the USA with you pet', where it says:

" Cats and dogs do not require a permit to enter the U.S., they do not require a rabies vaccination either, as the UK and Ireland are rabies free.

You should however, get a health certificate from your veterinary stating that your pet is fit and healthy to travel. You should also contact your airline and the respective State Department of Agriculture (in the U.S.), to check if they require further documents from you and for guidance on how to register your pet once you have arrived.

For further information, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

However, if you dig deeper, some States do indeed require a rabies vaccine and Pet Travel Companies seem to universally suggest rabies vaccination should be done.

Seems the Embassy is practicing 'Trump-speak' - say one thing but mean the opposite.

RE: Export to USA
all they need is the vaccination card with all the standard vaccinations including the rabies vaccination
Double check the link I posted above regarding what is needed on a rabies vacc certificate to make sure it's all there
Does anyone have any source that the chip has to actually be registered anywhere?
UK law requires the keeper to register the chip of a dog, no requirement to register cats in the UK, not sure about the USA

RE: Export to USA

I run into this at vettings (horses) relatively often - maybe a couple of times a year. Small heart-stopping moment when you get the wrong chip first, then relief when you scan again and find the one that matches the passport. But, as I always explain to students, it may well be far more common that horses have 2+ chips, it's just that if you find the 'right' one first then you don't look any further.

I know a horse who competed at Badminton (getting there involves competing at FEI events multiple times over several years, with the chip being scanned every time), and the first time its 'extra' chip was picked up was at Badminton itself.

RE: Export to USA

I've just rabies vaccinated 2 dogs going back to the USA soon. The owner is using an export company and has double-checked the requirements with them, all they need is the vaccination card with all the standard vaccinations including the rabies vaccination and a fit to fly certificate nearer the time. I did question it with the owner when he brought in the first dog yesterday and he double-checked and that's all they require. One of the dogs does have 2 chips as well as it already had an AVID chip in the US and was given an ISO-chip as well before export to the UK. Our scanner can read both. Does anyone have any source that the chip has to actually be registered anywhere? Of course dogs now have to be chipped and registered anyway, but cats don't. I also don't see multiple chips being an issue as all we do is certifying that the dog who carries this particular chip has been vaccinated. The owner needs to be aware though so he can make sure custom officers keep scanning until they find the right chip. We wouldn't have known about the Avid chip if our scanner couldn't read it, but it might have popped up at customs when re-entering the states.

RE: Export to USA

We do a few for export to USA just use the old BVA template.
You are right, once I'd found a chip and it matched the paperwork I'd be happy, but my nurse suggested I scan it again, and again..... We had been alerted because we were suspicious about the client, it was like they were deliberately leaving everything to the last minute - almost literally, possibly in a bid to make me rush and not double check and APHA had called us to warn us they thought this may be an attempt at an illegal export.
Maybe the chip number that came up first was different to that on the rabies vacc cert?
No it was the same - we were just suspicious.
The last page on the pet passport is a place to record extra chips or other idiosyncrasies.
I'm aware of that and if there had been a feasible explanation I may have just endorsed the passport accordingly but this just stank of dodgy dealings.

I had one of these - it was a pain but a bit of a money spinner.
I had a dodgy one last night, Chinese customers (not clients) required a pet passport for a Frenchie to travel to Taiwan. It had a rabies vaccine at another vet but only had a jpeg picture of the certificate and when scanned we found 3 microchips: the one on the rabies certificate wasn't registered, one was registered to a 'breeder' elsewhere who isn't contactable, showed it had been imported from Hungary and was 2 years older than the declared age, and the third was not registered either. The vet who gave the rabies shot hadn't picked up it had 3 chips. It has since been to another vet for a skin condition which is not doing well. I refused to issue a passport and APHA agreed. Apparently an export certificate has been sent to me but I won't be signing that either. However with states requiring rabies vaccination for resident pets (all states, for dogs, I believe), we usually vaccinate before travel. Note here (https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/dogs.html ) regarding minimum age of 3 months (not 12 weeks) and 30 days before entry for dogs if vaccinating.
No titre testing.
We issue a fit-to-fly certificate based on the old BVA template, and a rabies vaccination certificate printed out on headed paper with the practice stamp, nothing more Official (see above dog link for requirements of such a certificate). Can't see the point of issuing an EU passport unless they wish to come back to the EU? Owner to check with airline re timing of such fit-to-fly cert.
Need an IATA approved carrier.

RE: Export to USA

HI Tom

The pet passport is only for movement within the european community. All I would do is the rabies vaccine and give a rabies vaccine certificate and fit to fly as requested by their cargo or airline.
