Colouration of fat is due to carotene. Cartonenosis in people (common in vegetarians) shows as orange-coloured skin. As caroteine stored in fat, I presume it also shows as particularly yellow/orange fat. High dietary intake of carotene, I imagine. Which is fine, it's non-toxic. I would be interested to know what the diet is, especially if owner feels carrots, for example (mine love them!) - orange for the same reason, of course!

RE: Orange discolouration of fat in a dog- any ideas?

A colleague has spayed two CKCS from the same household a year or so apart and noted orange- yellow fat with both- she only remembered the first one when she phoned the owner post-surgery and the owner said, "oh yes, you told us that about the other one last year"! Both dogs were fed RCW food, think it might have been RCW cavalier. Bloods were normal, recovery from surgery uneventful, and we assumed a dietary component a bit like corn-fed chickens, or as you mentioned, carotenoid.
