Googlevet suggests ordinary DHP vaccines are used (we use Nobivac).
What’s the informed view on this? Do we give L4 or just diluent? Same protocol as naive dogs? Any tips on

RE: Vaccinating Raccoon Dogs - advice please
It's speciesist (specist?) victimisation plain and simple
Phew, noticed winking emoji there!

I sort of agree, there is species favouritism in conservation. Apart from the potential ecological impact of release, any "niche" species seems to attract all the wrong sort of folk. A bit like bratty exploiters, but worse...

That's why they are on the EU wide Invasive Alien Species list and must be kept in secure enclosures with importation, breeding and sale of raccoon dogs to be prohibited as of 2019. The only reason they haven't been restricted prior to this is human greed - their fur is too valuable. They are no worse as pets than domestic ferrets (and are arguably less likely to colonise UK habitat!) but no-one has the same loathing of ferrets for some reason.
Absolutely, but the inevitable always happens...these animals are soon owned as status symbols by people who can least afford them and their specialist care. Bearded dragons make lovely pets, as do budgies, small parrots and corn snakes. But how many do we see that are owned by switched on clients, living lovely healthy lives, compared to ..... putting it politely.... people with limited understanding and finance?

In my opinion they should not be legally available on the 'open' pet market.
Why not? Under suitable conditions they make good companion animals and they are under far tighter regulation than most companion animals which can only be a positive thing. Certainly those I have seen have been well looked after, properly socialised animals that are treated how domestic dogs should be treated!

Back to the OP, I still vaccinate as for domestic dogs and discuss the implications of the invasive alien species legislation restrictions.

I've dealt with a few racoons and they're pretty quick to spin around and nip. I would try food initially and if it's tucking into treats I would ask the owners to hold around the base of the head. However, when restrained if the animal resists and twists, and/or it's back legs (with pretty chunky claws) come up you might be better off popping a towel over and holding the body down against the table.
