It's a while since I've had a high grade MCT to manage. On of our RVNs has an 11yr Bichon with a classic SQ lump - FNA showed poorly differentiated cells with rare granules; had to stain with Giemsa to show up granules and confirm suspicion

RE: Mast Cell tumour advice

Hi Liz,

I've done a few of these in house with the help and advice of Iain Grant at chemopet.

1. Staging. Abdominal ultrasound with liver and splenic FNAs, FNA of the draining lymph node.

2. If no gross sign of metastases on scan, use a vinblastine/prednisolone chemo protocol. If there are masses within the solid organs, Masivet or Palladia may be better.

RE: Mast Cell tumour advice

Was the original mass removed in its entirety? Any staging performed? Eg thoracic X-ray and abdo imaging and FNAs/local LN biopsy or removal?

Higher grade MCT are more likely to respond to masiVet/palladia/other chemo so it is an option.

But even tho insured chemo is very costly so need to decide where money best spent... on further referral/staging or chemo.

RE: Mast Cell tumour advice

Thanks Richard - was going to email referral oncologist to see if worth referring. Insured to the hilt (it's her baby!).

RE: Mast Cell tumour advice

in a general practice setting or do you have access to referral?

Have tried palladia with good results in a MCT on leg that involved underlying structures, have also done vinblastine and preds but ended badly with tumour everywhere, preds by themselves in hopeless cases to reduce the histamine effect until everything else deteriorated but if you are open to referral, there some of these newer targeted immunotherapy treatments coming on all the time and your idea of masivet good if can afford it
