18kg four month old pup swallows lolly stick ( mini milk) wooden whole or in two pieces. Is surgery advised as in the face of no vomiting or any other symptoms? Is it acceptable to wait and see?

RE: 17 kg four month old pup swallows lolly stick

Just used the biopsy forceps on the thread, luckily the needle stayed on the thread. It was lovely thick embroidery thread in black with a hefty needle.

Seriously, although these things are expensive, I think you want to get every instrument that's available for your size of endoscope. It's so frustrating to see something but not be able to grasp it or biopsy it or whatever.

RE: 17 kg four month old pup swallows lolly stick

[quote user="Evelyn Barbour-Hill"]

We didn't dare to make it vomit because of the tie back. Wait and see seemed risky because he might have less flexible/mobile guts in places. We referred him for endoscopic retrieval (we don't have an endoscope) and the referral practice agreed with our reasoning and retrieved it without problems.

I once treated a Briard for pancreatitis after it ate a lot of food from a barbecue, it was particularly painful and was on a ketamine infusion, but made a full recovery. A couple of years later it had a CT scan at the RVC for an unrelated problem, and they found a wooden kebab stick free in its abdomen! Lolly stick should be fine though.

RE: 17 kg four month old pup swallows lolly stick

[quote user="Claudia Niehoegen"]

As long as the owner knew the potential for, and signs of deterioration to look out for in case it perforates (I assume it’s your dog?). Ultimately you have to make a hole in the gut to remove it surgically, so although it might make you breath a sigh of relief to have the lolly stick in your hand it’s not a risk-free process. I also wonder how many dogs swallow bits of stick in the garden that we do nothing about because we are blissfully unaware.
