I have a dog (Frenchie) requireing canthoplasty. She achieves trauma/iritis/ulcers monthly and will earn herself an enucleation soon enough. Other avenues have been explored and arent helping enough.

BSAVA manual has moderate info

RE: Canthoplasty Advice

Procedure went fine. Thanks for the input. Let's see if this fixes her! Most of her flares were traumatic so it should do the trick.

RE: Canthoplasty Advice

Caryn's article is great. Where I differ is that if you need to place a mattress suture to reduce tension then you haven't released enough of the eyelid from the medial canthus. They will stretch apart again if you do not release this tension and require a repeat surgery 1-2 years later.

This cut across the lower eyelid and through where the nasolacrimal duct is will release the lower eyelid and completely mobilise it

Some people deliberately include the NLD ,reducing drainage improves tear film retention .Its worth remembering that in does not improve tear film quality or reflex tearing ,these dogs are cursed with poor corneal sensitivity without the pugs predisposition to melanosis and keratitis, they may still need post operative lubrication. If your seeing lots of them you maybe better off getting involved in corneal cross linking with Riboflavin.

RE: Canthoplasty Advice

Thanks Gareth.
