It is in relation to trauma, approximately 3 weeks ago, suspected to be a cat bite wound. The abscess was initially lanced by a colleague and he was started on oral baytril

RE: Rabbit recurrent abscess

I would second what Mark and others have said. These are always surgical and the source needs to be identified. Culture of the capsule is required rather than the pus.

In this case I'd advise getting some histopathology as well. There is a chance that this is a case of cutaneous botryomycosis, a rare chronic pyogranulomatous infection of the skin and subcut tissue reported in hamsters and rabbits that results in multiple small abscesses that just keep appearing even post surgery. It has been associated with a few different bacteria but there is likely an immune component as well. I've seen one case in a hamster and one in a rabbit but Jo Hedley at RVC has more experience with these and may be worth contacting if it turns out to be the case on histo. The prognosis is unfortunately very poor if it is botryomycosis.

RE: Rabbit recurrent abscess

I find you often need to send a sample of the capsule for c&s.

RE: Rabbit recurrent abscess

Many thanks for the comments - I have a swab and a sample pot of the pus! I was always told that cultured of purulent material invariably returns as a sterile culture - something I've found to be true especially in small furries when I've submitted them in the past. Is there a better area to swab at?

May suggests x-rays but referral not an option unfortunately and no advanced imaging facilities here.

Have honey - will use! Also have penicillin - will switch! I'll get photos if I can.

RE: Rabbit recurrent abscess

The basic rule of rabbit abscesses is that they persist until the nidus of infection is identified and debrided.

Yes c and s would be good.

I would radiograph to ensure that there is no bone involvement

switch to penicillin injections pending c and s

consider more surgery

advanced imaging may be indicated if it’s available and costs allow it.

any pics?

i love medical grade honey to flush these with
