I have a very enthusiastic cockatiel owner asking me if these are safe or appropriate to take her bird outside. I have never come across these before. Do they rub? Are the secure for outdoor use- really? Any thoughts welcome. Thanks

Thank you- these confirm my hesitations exactly. Sure- I'm not a huge fan of birds as pets myself but clients have these animals and will come to us for advice, so I'd thought I'd try and get some professional consensus rather than just go on my knee jerk reaction- I hardly ever see birds and know very little about them.

The main concern is UV exposure rather than mimicking natural flight. I don't know why but she really doesn't want to use a bulb. Seems like best action is outdoors aviary. And a big fat NO to harnesses! lol.

Thanks everyone.

She could make a device with a piece of string and a selfie stick so she can wave it about in the air outside to give the sensation of flying with no risk of rubbing or entanglement.

When I read the thread title I seriously thought you were asking about some sort of jet-pack type arrangement or a harness-cum-seat arrangement on a drone.

Sorry, nothing serious to offer though other than to echo the concerns above.

I've no idea if they are safe, but would have concerns about rubbing. As for appropriate - no, completely inappropriate. If the idea is to give the bird some flying freedom, but ensure it doesn't escape on the grounds that it's not fair to not let it fly, then it's further evidence that birds are not suitable as pets.
