Interestingly, this kind of lesion is happening with increasing frequency since the recognition of injection site sarcoma as an entity and the recommendation that vaccinations are administered in the lower limb.

It is impossible to argue with the recommendation that CT be performed to optimally check for presence or absence of metastasis. Reports vary but we consider metastasis to be present in approximately 30% of these cases.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a thing in cats. Osseous differentiation can happen in a high grade tumour of soft tissues (deliberately avoiding saying soft tissue sarcoma because that is not exactly what I mean). Basically, for our purposes, they behave much the same way as mother high grade soft tissue sarcomas.

Amputation is likely to be the best treatment for this case. Please be aware that I have seen cases that have recurred at the site of high (hip disarticulation) amputation for a hock based sarcoma so do not state to the owner that amputation will definitely prove curative. It probably will but we cannot say it definitely will.

Yours
