If there is intent for them to go to working homes its fine. The person presenting the dog needs to provide some evidence they are likely to be used for work. It would be quite ridiculous trying to decide each puppy's fate in the first 5 days and only dock certain ones!

We chip when we dock if we don't know the person. It's easier in a 2 or 3 day old puppy than a wriggly one at 8 weeks.

How many are legally docked though, given that whole litters are simply advertised online as pets? It's only legal if they are likely to be used for work.

All docked puppies should have a certificate, the English version looks like this:

Interestingly I had to call the RCVS today for some clarification

A breeder had called and had had 7 puppies docked and he had been supplied with documentation. I've seen plenty of these in the past. They are invariably a single sheet with the date and a signature.

In this case the breeder can't get to the vet who docked and wanted another practice to microchip them. (you wouldn't chip 2 days old pups) but was refused at another practice due to a certification issue where it seemed the vet can't know that these were the puppies that were docked.

The proper form that should be used (in Wales but maybe everywhere) has a part for the docking and another section for someone to sign for the microchip. I've never seen one, but this chap assures me he has one, so we'll wait and see
