The way I see it, FHO is a salvage procedure- in this case FHO or PTS. It could have been a 50/50 call. I have done it in a rottie before in a similar situation and it worked well, but in this case obviously there were other complications. Thanks for the update!

RE: FHO in 7 Year Old Rottweiler ?

Update. Thanks all. This dog was radiographed 3 weeks ago elsewhere. I suggested blood work prior to lengthy surgery (FHO), given age. When I saw the dog, he was paretic on the LH with severe proprioceptive deficits and a huge mass over the left hip. FNA results just showed blood and fat so I doubt I reached any diagnostic area. Suspected chondrosarcoma as did not look like osteosarcoma on the radiograph. FHO no longer indicated (and thought HD secondary anyway). Put him on Panadeine Forte - equivalent to "Pardale" (?). He was already on Gabapentin and Carprofen). Advised poor Px, given time frame of huge mass development - 3 weeks. He was PTS a couple of days ago. No response to any pain relief.

A "dinovet" colleague of mine (very good surgeon - soft tissue and orthopaedic) would have done the FHO. Specialists say ok if < 25kg. Young vets probably never done one or too scared to try. I hadn't done one in 15 years, which is my excuse. To only offer medical Rx or expensive THR for HD, and nothing in between ?? Guess that's where we are headed.

RE: FHO in 7 Year Old Rottweiler ?

FHNE is fine as long as there is still good muscle mass over the joint and the aftercare/physio/analgesia are good. It goes wrong when people leave the neck too long and or the cut bone end retains contact with a very deformed over grown acetabular rim causing sciatic entrapment or the client does not get actively involved in the rehab . there is a really good section in a recent vet clinics north america . In long standing cases with muscle wasting there is a lot of Allodynia and pain expectation to overcome.

RE: FHO in 7 Year Old Rottweiler ?
I would. I've done it in larger dogs before and had very few issues.
And another one, 2 stars,no justification at all; so some animal may be limping around in pain because of this negative starring!!

I'm sure Julie isn't telling fibs!!

RE: FHO in 7 Year Old Rottweiler ?
of course - the femoral head excision procedure was developed for bipedal humans weighing much more. Problems tend to be what happens when the operated limb may not be weight bearing - owners up to lifting, physio etc?
The bleeding star system again, giving the wrong impression!

Look at this:

Excision of femoral head and neck for treatment of coxofemoral degenerative joint disease in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Comp Med. 2012 Dec;62(6):539-42.

and there are others.

Why 2 stars for something that is helpful yet not cite your evidence?

RE: FHO in 7 Year Old Rottweiler ?

I would.
