Yes I’m happy to certify a rabies vaccination-because it’s usually been done by our practice if it’s our client-so has all the info on computer including ‘microchip checked and number blah blah correct’! and it has at least got an associated LVI number on the passport.

For tapeworm treatment given abroad it doesn’t have an OV number associated with it and you hear of clients saying ‘the vet just gave me the tablet to give and signed the passport’-that’s my concern. I would not certify an EHC for the worming part based on that (I’ve always been sent a separate stamped certificate by vet giving it if the president-export checks weren’t done by outback practice).

I would have made YOU give the tablet while I watched... there is no way I'm manually pilling a dog unless I know that dog very well indeed!

There is no requirement to add historic vaccination details to the second passport but both passports must be presented for checks until a further vaccination is required'.
The key words here are 'can' and 'no requirement'.

My interpretation of recording the Echinococcus treatment is the 'the latest' is the one that is current i.e. within 24 hrs and 5 days, not the last one done the previous journey, maybe last year - why the hell would anyone need to know that?

'No requirement' does not mean you can't enter the last rabies vaccine in a new passport as it makes it a lot more convenient than carting 2 passports around and confusing some simple immigration officer. So I do.

Absolutely correct! Filling in the previous rabies vaccine information is only required for a replacement passport when replacing one lost or stolen, not full! Until the next vaccine is given, BOTH passports must be presented when travelling. All the owner information/pet information especially microchip number needs to be completed and then any newly administered treatments recorded as appropriate. Totally bananas - think the passports should have at least double the amount of space for worming treatments as they do.

RE: Pet Passport Renewal

I don't see where the confusion arises? Pet must be accompanied by valid proof of both rabies and tapeworm treatments - this may be certified in one or two passports with all new entries being added to most recent passport [original passport certifies rabies UNTIL new booster is entered in new pasport?]

Why they didn't just allow for frequent travel in the number of tapeworm entries I will never know!

Replacement Passports.

An OV can issue a passport based on the information available in a Third Country veterinary certificate with supporting documents. These supporting documents are required for enter to the EU and must be sufficient to allow a passport to be issued. In addition, when a passport becomes full, a new passport will be issued. A replacement passport will generally only need the latest vaccination included. If the expected travel is within the next 21 days, the owner will need to also present their old passport for checks by the carrier or pets checkers at airports to demonstrate that this recorded vaccine is a valid booster and not a primary vaccination. If serology predates the only recorded vaccination, the owner is also advised to carry supporting documents showing a previous vaccination which validates the blood result. If the need for a replacement is specifically due to section VII (Echinococcus treatment) being full (e.g. a frequent traveller) a second passport can be issued for the dog in which only the microchip details are duplicated and the latest tapeworm treatment is recorded. There is no requirement to add historic vaccination details to the second passport but both passports must be presented for checks until a further vaccination is required

RE: Pet Passport Renewal
Yes, they should travel with both passports anyway as the rabies vacs don’t get transferred across to the new one until they actually need a new rabies vac.
What is the point of issuing a new passport if the last rabies vaccine is not entered? If it is certified in the old one you can re-certify it in the new one - that is what I do, its no different than if you're starting from scratch with just evidence that a rabies vaccine has been done. As for worming, I have never transferred the last record over to the new passport, as said if its not been done in the last 5 days what's the point? - everything starts from square one.

Perhaps this uncertainty is an indication that we do need to do some CPD and take an exam to re-validate our OV status after all!

RE: Pet Passport Renewal

Yes, they should travel with both passports anyway as the rabies vacs don’t get transferred across to the new one until they actually need a new rabies vac.

Go to the very last paragraph (of course) - states specifically that if for replacement for Echinococcus treatment section being full, new passport can be issued with the most recent treatment being recorded.

As per previous conversations I have had with DEFRA/AHVLA/APHA - If the previous dose has been administered by A.N.Other vet then you can fill and certify on the basis of certified documentation from another qualified professional - they have signed to say they have completed the paperwork as per regulations, so you have no need to be concerned that this was done incorrectly, you are basing your certification on that of another, equally responsible and liable individual. Take a photocopy of the paperwork for insurance if you are concerned at all. I assume you are happy to record a booster rabies vaccine, even if you didn't administer the vaccine last time round? No difference here at all.
