I need some help with a 30+ year-old, African grey parrot I've just seen. The owners have noticed a respiratory 'click' for a while and on examination he had laboured breathing after a short period of exercise (flapping while on the owner

RE: Parrot problems

You can give them answers. Infection (keep it general) is likely and likely to be a fungal cause.

Prognosis guarded to poor but with expensive specialist care the chances for the bird are slightly higher.

Over to them to decide how much and how far they want to take it.

You have done your job and it is then their responsibility to move things forward.

RE: Parrot problems

[quote user="Niall Taylor"]Thanks for all the suggestions, folks, I'll get back to the owner. We get these enquiries all the time post Baytril trial, and most just fall off the perch because they do not want to pay anyone.

My favourite comment is don't buy a lamborghini and expect to get it fixed for £10.00 at Halfords.

In our area the owners tend to get their dogs and cats treated at the PDSA so the thought of actually paying for medicine surgery and diagnostics is extremely alien to them, PDSA vets will not touch it of course.

RE: Parrot problems

+1 for the above

However if there are no finances then adding some antifungals won't hurt as long as if its fungitrax you keep to the low end of the dose range cf toxicity in AGPs

Goodluck

RE: Parrot problems

If the specialist has suggested at least, bloods, radiographs and possibly endoscopy, then I'm afraid if the owners want a diagnosis, that is what is needed!

However, your differentials include aspergillosis and neoplasia so if you do nothing else, you really do need to radiograph to get an idea of prognosis. Don't forget that parrots do often continue to 'look well', right up to the point they fall off the perch and die! (Especially if they have an asper plaque in their airway, which is a strong possibility.)

As far as a miracle cure...if it is aspergillosis, I'm afraid the prognosis is poor, even with medical treatment, as these birds are often riddled with it.
