1) Can breeders obtain this and inject their own rabbits
2) Can they sell the rabbits on, telling the new owner that they've had the vaccination with no signed certification?

No. We will supply dog vaccines to some gamekeepers/farmers under similar circumstances. Only in cases where we are in regular contact and on the strict understanding that no record card will be provided (so not puppies etc). Some farmers do their own horse tetanus vaccinations too.

RE: Eravac VHD2 and breeders

Rabbits are complicated by the fact that they fall between pets and crops. It is probably the norm for rabbits bred for meat to be vaccinated by the 'farmer'.

I would suggest the owners do not rely on the vaccination as there is absolutely no clear evidence that it has been done properly. However that is their call.

Better that they are vaccinated than not I suppose.

RE: Eravac VHD2 and breeders
Has to be better that they get the vaccine, rather than the huge cost puts them off and the rabbit doesn't get vaccinated.
True. In this area, Wiltshire, the second strain of VHD is seen as a big problem at the moment and a present/former BSAVA president is at the forefront of alerting rabbit owners so it's only a good thing really.

I posted this as I was taken by surprise by an owner presenting a pet rabbit as such, it's not a million miles from breeders of dogs asking for vaccines is it?

Once opened has to be used 'immediately'. As long as the rabbit(s) are genuinely under the care of a practice then it makes perfect sense to sell the bottle to the owner for use like this. Just as we would with any herd/flock vaccination in farm animals. Has to be better that they get the vaccine, rather than the huge cost puts them off and the rabbit doesn't get vaccinated.

RE: Eravac VHD2 and breeders

Thanks Bob

That fits the tale I was given.

Handed a piece of paper with Erican VHD2 and date injected. (at 8 weeks) when rabbit came in for the 'other vaccination

They can inject their own rabbits if they have the vaccine.

They can inform new owners that the vaccine has been given.

I would always be concerned as to whether the vaccine was being stored properly, injected correctly etc so I would advise new owners to get it done again if they wish to be sure.
