Pardale V is NFA-VPS, so it can be sold by any pet stores, or online stores where there is a suitably qualified person (SPQ) or by a pharmacy. Each tablet contains paracetamol 400mg plus codeine 9mg (so a bit more codeine than in the over-the-counter version for humans - co-codamol - paracetamol 500mg plus codeine 8mg). It puzzles me why it is available in this way and that there is no licensed paracetamol-only product.

I think as the licence is for 5 days use, then actually using it over that makes it off licence and therefore requires a prescription. (In a similar way using a human over the counter drug would need a prescription for use in an animal). Obviously many of us do use it for much longer periods, but we are vets and using our knowledge to decide this is suitable. I raised this a few months ago when I found a client was buying a pot of 500 without a prescription.

I would think it is only logical to change the category of Pardale V to POM-V except for orders under a certain level comparable to that for humans.

Poor Mrs Atkinson

I do think the Pardale V works better than just paracetamol. We use quite a lot of it to very positive effect.

[/quote]Well from a personal use perspective I find the combination more effective than paracetamol alone for a range of aches and pains from headaches to chronic skeleto-muscular injuries.

It's not a loading dose, it's the dose. Find me anything that supports the BSAVA often quoted (and rather convenient) 10mg/kg. Five days only but 5 on and 1 off is within the recommendation. In what way should they be interested?

Co-codamol available OTC in the chemist.
