Hi all,

this is a blood smear made from a colleague's case who is on longterm treatment for presumed IMHA (finances were restricted at the time of investigation and this dog has been very stable on pred for some time now).
He came in for routine

RE: blood smear interpretation

wouldn't agree on the condition of the RBC - looks like polychromasia and anisocytosis with fairly poor density (low Hg) is still present so my suspicion is you still have blood loss / rbc destruction with possible iron depletion taking place.

RE: blood smear interpretation

Its important to remember that you are looking at a 2-dimensional picture of an 3D object. What I believe you are looking at is a horseshoe-shaped nucleus "end-on" / similar to seeing intestines end-on on x-rays presenting themselves as circles.

RE: blood smear interpretation

I would label that a skipocyte - I consider 1-2 skipocytes an inconsequential finding.

(as in I "skip" it in doing a differential count as i'm not sure what it is )

My best guess would be a mitotic stage?

They can take up loads of different shapes, the most common being a bit like a horseshoe. Btw I think the RBC's look quite healthy so no indication of IMHA in my opinion

RE: blood smear interpretation

Neutrophill?
