Weird, but interesting, consultation by committee!!

Saw the cat tonight

1) Abdomen comfortable, cat looked fine

2) Bloods taken for Chem 10, BUN, Creat and Glucose all normal

3) The sample was taken into a container that may not have been 100% clean

Conclusion

I have re-assured that the Gin cabinet is safe tonight. Moniter and maybe repeat the sample in 3 weeks time into a clean container.

As this lovely practice have a new assistant starting Monday, this case may be lost to this vets follow up

I think some companies put a dye in it so the urine should fluoresce under UV light?

What power lens was the microscope on? Could be bilirubin crystals on a high power?

how was sample collected? i'm going for artifact.

don't look like calcium oxalate to me, at least not in absence of more classical crystals also noted.

Calcium oxalate would be soluble in HCl and insoluble in acetic acid if you want to test it later.

Yup, see loads in anti-freeze although these aren't the classic picket fences.

We've had three this week already.

I think there's a test available now? Tend to go on high circulating blood glucose (+/- glucosuria) and urine crystals. By the time the latter appear it's too late. May be Grandma sucking eggs but the recommendation is IV alcohol within 4 hours of ingestion or there's no point.

Have a look at take your pick.... don't look like struvite but I usually just saw a kidney dish full of what looked like table salt..... pH of urine would give a clue??

Now that is interesting as posted this for another vet

She's just said 'The urine smells odd' and the cat is lethargic.

We think it's an indoor cat only and lives with a bunch of Savannah Cats fed on day old chicks and the like

The vet hasn't seen the cat, the client (who's quite intense) just brought a sample in

I've just said, we need to see the cat.
