I confess that I have never really understood the reasoning behind the use of Buscopan in calves or dogs. It might offer some analgesic effect I suppose but in terms of diarrhoea, I think that the logic is not to stop the diarrhoea but to let the animal use its natural defence to evacuate the toxic contents from the intestines. Fluids can be replaced but why prevent evacuation of the bowels containing pathogenic material plus remnants of damaged tissue? Such toxins are better outside the animal where it cannot be absorbed etc.
Because owners for some reason don't like the dog shitting round the house every few minutes and it is a damn sight more convenient to slow the shits down that have the animal in on a drip when it gets dehydrated. I bet Tom Dumoulin wished he'd had some in the Giro!
..Even phenybutazone/Tomanol if still available, or Ketofen nowadays.
Don't you mean in the olden days?!
We have some on the shelf and use occasionally; it's pretty cheap.

RE: Does anyone still use Buscopan in cats and dogs?

The vials don’t sting vs buscopan co injectable.

How do I select which cases to use it on? Well it’s mostly a gut feeling really (ha ha ).

Dosage is a bit of a guess. I tend to give it subcutaneously, and it seems to sting around about the same as Cerenia. Anything with demonstrable severe gut pain will get Cerenia and opioids.
