I understand hypocalcaemia can be a feature of renal disease, but not aware of this being so significant to the point of neuro signs and seizures...
sorry it is a bit of a long post

RE: Dog with severe uraemia and hypocalcaemia

Really sorry to hear that. Sounded pretty hopeless whatever the cause though

RE: Dog with severe uraemia and hypocalcaemia

Yes my colleague examined the urinary tract with ultrasound.

i am most suspicious of EG too, as I have never seen that degree of hypoCa with other types

of renal disease.

She was euthanised this evening.

there are distinctive changes. Had a dog with anuric renal failure, v low ionised calcium, high anion gap last weekend which I feel sure was ethylene glycol toxicity despite no known exposure. It only takes a tiny amount to poison a small dog, easily licked up if any spilt anywhere. Euthanased the dog I saw.

RE: Dog with severe uraemia and hypocalcaemia
Sounds like ethylene glycol toxicity to me. Extremely poor prognosis sadly
I agree with Jenny. If the dog is oliguric/anuric then it's even more likely. Get a urine sample to look for calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals which would confirm it. Some antifreeze manufacturers put a fluorescent dye in the product, so if you shine a UV light over the urine and it glows that would also be an indication of that.
yes that was one of our first thoughts on cause. Owners adamant no chance but never can rule it out. Several urine samples have been checked but no crystals seen.

Urea >40 after fluids = dead animal

Not wishing to be flippant, but that's been my experience. Had 2 in last 2 weeks, both with very few signs reanl failure, then crashed as predicted.
yes with only rare exception that is my experience too

i cannot see this case turning around, and been surprised to see it still with us each day

but with being at the 3 day mark now without a dramatic response I expect euthanasia is imminent
