I have a cat who had a subtotal colectomy for megacolon secondary to nerve damage from tail pull injury (RTA). The ileocolic valve was left intact. He had the surgery 4 weeks ago.
I found in the literature that 80% of cats that have this procedure

RE: Post op expectations for subtotal colectomy

Great, thank you both for the suggestion. Definitely will give some vitb12 and think about either investigating diarrhoea or trialling pred.

Thanks very much

RE: Post op expectations for subtotal colectomy

I have done this maybe once or twice a year, more often Siamese/persians with chronic obstipation problems . Generally works very well and they are pretty normal and solid after 2-3 weeks, sometimes sooner. I would be thinking what other problems does this cat have ? IBD ALS etc B12 is never a bad idea though.

RE: Post op expectations for subtotal colectomy

are you supplementing Vit B? The colon is a major source in the cat and it has been removed.

Diet? Options are high residue fibre or the opposite of minimal residue such as A/D. I would go bland as possible, pref dry food to start

The cats I have done colectomy on have not had diarrhoea though so wonder if something else. Low dose preds (2.5mg sid/bid) until diarrhoea actually under control, then re-assess? The surgery has healed by now so should be safe to try get the IBD under control
