In my opinion it's useful, but it's not essential as we used to think.

It's good that people should worry about the damage that polishing might do, but I wish people would worry about the damage they will do by using poor equipment or poor technique for scaling. It's good that people should question whether polishing is of any benefit, but too many people seem not to question whether the supragingival scaling they do is of any benefit.

Ellie, if you let me have your address I will send you a copy of the special issue that BVDA Journal did on polishing.

And, er, since you are clearly interested in doing things right, why not join BVDA?

I think there have been a few threads on this and there still isn't (to my mind!) a totally clear consensus! I'm rubbish at linking to threads, but I think there was one quite recently, if you scroll through/ search hopefully you can find it!

search "polishing" at the top right and quite a few come up. Hope that helps!
