It appears that Trimethoprim sulpha is no longer available- the factory that made it has stopped and it seems all the drug companies got it from the same place.
I know lots of vets don't like it now, but it is a good choice for prostatitis

RE: Trimethoprim/sulpha- no longer available?

i looked on medicines.org, and as some one else mentioned above, there are co-trimoxazole tablets and suspension available on the human side

paediatric susp 200/40mg/5ml

adult susp 400/80mg/5ml

400/80mg and 800/160mg tablets

the newish animal licensed sulfatrim seems to be totally impractical for anything other than the small creatures it was made for
Well probably a tangent... A group of us recently had to do a critical literature review of antibiotics in scouring calves <3wks old. There is a lot of research into the area but the outcomes we found were that antibiotics have no effect to morbidity rate in systemically well calves but certain parenteral ABs did reduce morbidity in groups of systemically unwell calves attributed to either primary or secondary e coli overgrowth and bacteraemia. I think the only ABs with enough evidence to support were potentiated amoxicillin and TMPS

Goes along with fluids and supportive care ofc.

RE: Trimethoprim/sulpha- no longer available?
Not good for farm med either as it is a good choice for severe calf scour
At the moment we have some massive tablets that I'm guessing were designed for calves, so we're hanging onto them and divvying them up!

There is a human preparation, but I believe it is trimetheprim only- anyone know if that makes a big difference?
The sulfonamide is potentiated and I think the two work together synergistically so there is a lower MIC and it broadens the spectrum that are susceptible. I think I read somewhere about high bacterial resistance to trimethoprim alone (especially for e coli??) but they still seem to use it for cystitis in humans.

Not good for farm med either as it is a good choice for severe calf scour

RE: Trimethoprim/sulpha- no longer available?
Really annoying, as I also use it for urinary and prostate issues- I don't really want a dog on really broad spectrum antibiotics for 4-6 weeks, and it was so cheap and cheerful
For urinary antibiotics, often plain amoxicillin (eg Amoxibactin) will do just fine and much cheaper than synulox.
If you go off down the cascade, you can buy human generic Co-Trimoxazole tabs 800/160mg for about 30p each

RE: Trimethoprim/sulpha- no longer available?

Really annoying, as I also use it for urinary and prostate issues- I don't really want a dog on really broad spectrum antibiotics for 4-6 weeks, and it was so cheap and cheerful .
